Here's a fascinating (and instructive, if you fancy giving it a go) video of how scientists place unique markings on the remarkable social insects from the family Formicidae, ants.

Such 'coding' has helped scientists identify and conduct experiments on 12,500 out of an estimated 22,000 ant species:
